Have you heard about Will Smith Movie in Cartagena?
“Gemini man” tells the story of a contract killer (Will Smith) who wants to retire from the business but a younger clone of him won’t let him and forces the protagonist to fight one last battle, this time against himself, a film shot in the city of Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.
Gemini Man makes the most of the beauty of Cartagena de Indias
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Singer and notorious actor Will Smith fell under the enchantment of Cartagena de Indias whilst starring in the Hollywood blockbuster Gemini Man. The film stars Will Smith as a hitman who becomes the target of a younger clone of himself, in an action and sci-fi story that has become the recipient of several innovations. A very important part of the film takes place in the beautiful streets of Cartagena.
The film was a pleasant experience also for the director Ang Lee, who recalls with appreciation his adventure in the Heroica: “it’s interesting, because in the original script the location was Cuba, but the Trump government started to put a lot of problems. And looking for locations, then I saw the pictures of Cartagena and I thought it was a very beautiful place. So, I went and checked there and fell in love, it’s a magnificent city.”
The movie director adds that shooting in Cartagena was also strategically perfect for what he was doing with the new filming technologies.
Caribbean Region of Colombia
The Taiwanese director had this to say about this beautiful location in the Atlantic coast of Colombia: “the city was very welcoming, very accommodating. It’s a very touristy place and we were able to block off certain areas, so we had to work very carefully with the local government maintaining and using certain areas, blocking off certain areas to shoot, so each sequence day by day was very strict; but it was certainly a wonderful experience.”
As for Will Smith, his experience was no less rewarding: “Shooting in Cartagena was like dreaming of being in a big multi-day party, it was fascinating, and it’s a perfect place for the technology itself, because the movie director had companies inventing cameras and designs to be able to capture the shots he wanted and a big part of how he wanted to create long, unique shots. There were even shots of some of the action sequences that were two and a half or three minutes long. I wanted to shoot as much of a single take as possible. So, the shooting and the use of the technology was actually kind of difficult, but being in Cartagena, in Budapest and in Georgia (the southern U.S. state) were perfect locations,” Smith explains. “I would say that outside of the difficulty of filming, the main reason I enjoyed this film so much was being able to shoot in places as beautiful as Cartagena.”
Will smith even dedicated a video and a song to “La Heroica” that you can find in youtube, go on and check it, it is very fun! and recreates perfectly his adventures in Cartagena de Indias.
